Evil Geniuses in a Nutshell (In a Nutshell (O'Reilly)) (Taschenbuch)
von Illiad, J. D. Frazer

Rezensionen:
I'm very familiar with the Nutshell books, what my pal Van Wolverton calls "propellerhead books," or books for the nerds among us. This is appropriate because nerds appreciate brevity. On the other hand,Evil Geniuses in a Nutshellappreciates levity.

I was guessing that maybe the book was about crazy computer scientists. And, in a way, it is! But more accurately,Evil Geniuses in a Nutshellis a collection of theUser Friendlycartoon strips, originally published on the Internet athttp://www.userfriendly.org/. The fuzzy-headed-with-feet guy on the book's cover is Dust Puppy, the strip's mascot (who is apparently very popular among the propellerheads; a copy of him secretly appears in the gameQuake III). Other characters, familiar to anyone who works in high tech, also appear in the comic strip, as well as various foreign agents, domestic spies, and what possibly could be parodies of well-known computer geeks.

The book is funny--the only Nutshell book I've ever laughed at. The illustrations were obviously done on a computer in some bitmap graphics application, but they aren't bad (and don't tell me they're stupid unless you've tried it; itishard). The humor is often subtle, but I occasionally found myself bursting out laughing. LikeDilbertCalvin and Hobbes, or evenMarried with Children, it takes a while to soak in the humor, but then it becomes addictive.

I recommendEvil Geniuses in a Nutshellif for no other reason than so you can have a truly funny computer book on your shelf. (Or in the WC, which is where I read it.) There is a follow-on calledUser Friendlythe comic strip, also from O'Reilly. The more you're into technical things, the more you'll appreciate it.--Dan Gookin

While working as the creative for an ISP, thirtysomething Canadian J.D. "Illiad" Frazier enjoyed the banter and humour shared between staff, particularly between the technical and non-technical staff. A lifetime doodler, he scribbled down some of it in the form of cartoons. He passed them around the office. The drawings were (and still are) very basic, but the humour was dead accurate, and his colleagues encouraged him to produce more. Before long, the scribbled cartoons had turned into a phenomenon with a Web site and cult following. In 1999 O'Reilly publishedUser Friendly, and, following on the popularity of that book,Evil Geniuses in a Nutshellcontinues the tale of life and times at Columbia Internet ISP, with its cast of techies, designers, executives, AIs, hard-core geeks and one cheeky dust-puppy.

Illiad revels in the trappings of techie culture--abundant references toStar WarsThe Hitchhiker's GuideTolkien, Quake andLinux("Stef thinks he's a penguin. Is he all right?"). But there's also humour here for those who aren't white, wired 18-30 year-old males. Illiad gets the way technology is changing the way we live: our curious relationship to spam ("I read it every morning like I read headlines! 'Be wealthy in 30 days!' 'A free turnip!' and 'Babette is waiting for you!'I want Babette to be waiting for me!!"); our habit of hiding behind disembodied digital communication ("I just find that in chat I can be a lot more expressive"); plus a healthy dose of self-deprecation ("You hit it off with A.J.? That's like Angelina Jolie being attracted to Illiad. It would just bewrong.") Smart and quirky, Illiad's cartoons cut through market-speak with laugh-out-loud humour, documenting the idiosyncrasies of a subculture that's moving fast into the mainstream eye.--Tamsin Todd
